Brandywine native Nahvarj Mills, 31, was charged by a US District Court grand jury on a 27-count indictment this week following weeks of terrorizing his ex-girlfriend.
According to court documents, Mills and his ex began dating in December 2022, and he allegedly physically abused her on multiple occasions before she ended the relationship in the summer of 2023.
"Angry about the breakup, Mills began contacting the victim by phone," prosecutors said. "He appeared uninvited at her workplace in Maryland and at her home in the District, threatening to distribute sexually explicit images of the woman" - a threat he made good on.
Then Mills allegedly repeatedly egged on his victim for several months.
On Nov. 23, the woman got a series of text messages that stated, in part, "Got no job, got no kids, got no family. I have nothing to do. But what I do have, is the money to keep bothering you.”
Another instance reported on New Year's Eve found that Mills' ex received 30 calls from "No Caller ID" that were followed after she attempted to arrange a meet with Mills to make amends.
During that meeting, prosecutors say that he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her head.
Days later, on Jan. 2, Mills' conduct was reported to the Metropolitan Police Department and orders of protection were later issued for both the victim and her mother, who was the recipient of multiple explicit photos and videos of her daughter.
Mills also wrote, “I can easily pull this .40 trigger,” followed by photos of a gun and ammunition that appear consistent with the .40 caliber firearm and ammo later recovered from Mills’ home during a residential search warrant.
In early January, his efforts continued when Mills created a fake Instagram account in his ex's name, later sending explicit imagery of her to friends and family.
Things escalated when on Jan. 6, Ring camera footage captured footage of a man believed to be Mills outside the victim’s home, spreading out typed-out paragraphs containing threatening messages along with more explicit images.
That conduct continued even after a judge granted an Order of Protection.
"The campaign of stalking and violence against the first victim escalated further in late January 2024," court documents state. "Three separate shootings targeted the victim’s bedroom on Jan 21, 22, and 23.
"The third shooting occurred after Mills called the victim and threatened to kill her."
Mills was arrested on Jan. 26 when he again returned to her DC home and he was charged for violating the protective order.
He was placed in federal custody in February, and he was initially charged on a seven-count indictment in July.
Mills is now charged with:
- Cyberstalking in violation of a protective order;
- Cyberstalking;
- Interstate stalking in violation of a protection order;
- Interstate stalking in violation of a protection order – emotional distress, use of a dangerous weapon;
- Two counts of interstate stalking in violation of a protection order – bodily injury, emotional distress, use of a dangerous weapon;
- Interstate violation of a protection order;
- Three counts of interstate violation of a protection;
- Use of a dangerous weapon;
- Three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon;
- Possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence;
- Interstate communications with intent to extort;
- Assault with intent to kill while armed;
- Three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon;
- Three counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence;
- Four counts of first degree unlawful publication.
He has been detained since February.
